The Iranian pistachio is the export product where grade economics, food safety regulation and destination-market politics intersect most sharply. A buyer sourcing Buying Fandoghi Pistachios in Bulk is almost always making a price-per-kilogram decision against California-origin pistachios, and the Fandoghi variety is the Iranian answer to that comparison: a small, round, high-yield nut that delivers the lowest cost per kilogram of any Iranian pistachio grade while retaining the flavour and colour profile that built Iran’s pistachio reputation. This page is the sourcing framework Palude applies to every bulk pistachio order, from a single pallet of Fandoghi for a Russian distributor to a full-container load for an industrial user.
Why Fandoghi is the most economical Iranian pistachio for industrial buyers
Iran produces several pistachio varieties — Kalleh Ghoochi (large round), Akbari (long), Ahmad Aghaei (long, light), and Fandoghi (small round) — and each occupies a distinct price tier. Fandoghi is the smallest and the most abundant, which makes it the Most Economical Iranian Pistachio for Industrial Buyers when the application is not retail-display. A 1 kg retail bag wants the long, photogenic Akbari or Ahmad Aghaei nut; an industrial pistachio butter line, a bakery inclusion, an ice cream manufacturer, or a confectionery filling operation does not care about nut length — it cares about kernel yield, flavour, and price per kilogram of usable kernel. On all three, Fandoghi wins.
The yield point matters more than buyers sometimes realise. Fandoghi shells are thin and the kernel-to-shell ratio is high, which means a metric ton of in-shell Fandoghi yields more usable kernel than the same weight of Kalleh Ghoochi. For a buyer running a Pistachio Butter Bulk Supply Wholesale line, the kernel yield per ton of in-shell input is the number that drives the unit economics, not the headline per-kilo price.
Iranian Pistachio Supplier for Russia: the destination that defines the trade
Russia is the single largest destination for Iranian pistachios, and the Iranian Pistachio Supplier for Russia relationship has its own established trade conventions. Russian importers typically buy in-shell Fandoghi in 50 kg jute or polypropylene bags, palletised, FOB Bandar Abbas or delivered DAP to Moscow via the Iran-Azerbaijan-Russia overland corridor or via the Caspian Sea port of Astrakhan. The overland route is the faster of the two — 10-14 days transit from Urmia to Moscow — and is the route we default to for Russian-bound pistachio orders.
The Russian destination brings two specific compliance requirements. First, Russia’s EAEU phytosanitary regime requires the Iranian Plant Protection Organization certificate plus, in some cases, an EAC conformity declaration handled by the Russian importer. Second, Russian retail and industrial buyers are increasingly aflatoxin-aware following several highly publicised recalls, and large Russian importers now require aflatoxin test results below 4 ppb total aflatoxin — tighter than the EU’s 10 ppb limit for pistachios. Our Kerman suppliers run HPLC aflatoxin testing on every lot, and we ship the test report with the phytosanitary certificate.
Bulk Closed Mouth Pistachio Wholesale: the safety and quality distinction
The single most important grade distinction in Iranian pistachio export is open-mouth versus closed-mouth. An open-mouth pistachio has a split shell — the shell has naturally opened along its suture during ripening, and the nut is ready to eat by hand. A Bulk Closed Mouth Pistachio Wholesale order is for pistachios that did not split: the shell is intact, the kernel is protected, and the nut is destined for industrial processing (shelling, slicing, butter, paste, confectionery filling) rather than for hand-snacking.
Closed-mouth pistachios matter to industrial buyers for two reasons. First, the closed shell protects the kernel from oxidation and aflatoxin development during transit and storage — the kernel arrives in better condition than a split-shell nut that has been exposed to air and moisture. Second, closed-mouth pistachios trade at a discount to open-mouth of the same variety, because the retail snacking market does not want them. For an industrial buyer who is going to shell the nut anyway, the closed-mouth grade is both safer and cheaper. This is the grade we supply to pistachio butter and paste manufacturers.
Aflatoxin control: the non-negotiable
Aflatoxin is the food-safety issue that ends Iranian pistachio supplier relationships. Aflatoxin B1 is a carcinogenic mycotoxin produced by Aspergillus mould species that can colonise pistachios in the orchard, during drying, or in storage if moisture is uncontrolled. The EU sets a maximum of 10 ppb total aflatoxin (8 ppb B1) for pistachios destined for direct human consumption; Russia’s de facto large-importer standard is 4 ppb total; some Middle East destinations accept Codex’s 10 ppb.
Our aflatoxin control protocol has four stages:
- Orchard-level sorting: early-split nuts (the highest aflatoxin risk) are removed at harvest, not after.
- Drying discipline: nuts are dried to 6-7% moisture within 24 hours of harvest, the threshold below which Aspergillus cannot grow.
- Optical sorting: every lot passes through an optical sorter that removes stained, insect-damaged and early-split nuts by colour and shape.
- HPLC testing: every export lot is sampled and tested by an accredited Iranian laboratory, and the certificate ships with the cargo.
We will not ship a pistachio lot without a valid aflatoxin certificate. A buyer who asks us to skip the test is a buyer we do not ship to.
Grades, sizing and the Fandoghi count
Pistachio grades are sized by the number of nuts per ounce (often written as a count, e.g. “28-30” means 28-30 nuts per ounce). Fandoghi is typically traded in the 26-28, 28-30, and 30-32 count ranges. The smaller the count number, the larger the nut — and the higher the price. For industrial buyers the count is a processing-line consideration (a slicing line calibrated for 28-30 will not run cleanly on 30-32), not a quality consideration. We quote Fandoghi with the count range specified and the count tolerance (±1) stated on the proforma.
Packaging for industrial and Russian export
Our standard export packaging for Fandoghi and closed-mouth pistachios:
- In-shell, industrial: 50 kg polypropylene woven bags, or 25 kg vacuum-sealed cartons for higher-value kernel-bound lots.
- In-shell, Russian retail-bound: 50 kg jute bags palletised for the Moscow overland route.
- Kernels: 12.5 kg vacuum-sealed foil pouches, 2 pouches per carton, for the butter/paste/slicing market.
- Pistachio butter / paste: 20 kg food-grade plastic pails or 200 kg drums, nitrogen-flushed, for industrial condiment and confectionery manufacturers.
For buyers consolidating pistachios with other Iranian food exports, the Mazafati dates Bam vs Jiroft wholesale and golden almonds direct sourcing Iran verticals share the same temperature-controlled consolidation logic — pistachios and almonds ship dry, dates ship cold, and they should not share a reefer set-point.
Lead time, MOQ and the harvest cycle
The Iranian pistachio harvest runs from late August through October, with the Kerman and Rafsanjan harvests peaking in September. New-crop pricing is set in October-November as the harvest volume becomes clear. Carry-stock from the previous harvest is available year-round but depletes and reprices upward from June onwards as the new crop approaches.
- Minimum order: 1 metric ton for standard export; 5 metric tons for container consolidation.
- Lead time: 12-18 business days from proforma acceptance for stock grades; 25-35 days for bespoke kernel sizing and packaging.
- Incoterms: FOB Bandar Abbas, DAP Moscow (overland), CFR/CIF to other destination ports.
